November 16th - Boy Meets World Thanksgiving (What the World needs right now)

Peter J. Rendina

The Boy meets world Thanksgiving special has our lovable best friends Cory and Shawn scheming to have a conjoined thanksgiving with their families. It doesn’t seem to be a good idea between the two’s parents, but their persistence has the holiday being celebrated in Shawn’s trailer park double wide. The Matthew’s family come from a blue collar middle class neighborhood so the trailer park holiday doesn’t entice anyone except Cory. The Hunter’s seem to be putting on a front to impress the Matthews with their nice paper ware and fancy cheese spread.

As the day goes on little things are brought to attention that these two families are very different in culture. The boys don’t see it this way and continue to try making it work best they can. When disaster strikes Cory, Shawn, Eric, and Morgan find refuge at Big Frankie and Young Herman’s trailer for some real thanksgiving brotherhood. They sit around the table and discuss what they’re thankful for. We see that the younger generation has found comfort in one another and only see each other as good friends and great people. The parents realize the error of their ways and come together to celebrate and give thanks which the holiday stands for.

A strong theme presented in this episode is the class division between the Hutus and Tutsis. It is setup in the beginning with Feeny’s class having to write a paper over Thanksgiving break about the Rwandan genocide. In the end Shawn writes an A+ paper about his experience on Thanksgiving with his family and the Matthews fighting the breaking of bread. He shows that there is cultural, racial, and class divide in all areas of the world even though we may be blind to it.

I think this is a special episode because we see class diversity and cultural differences that can stand in the way of people coming together. I feel the world needs to see this episode because with all the chaos and division that has been setup due to this political divide we need to realize that we are all human, we all have different backgrounds, and we all have something great to bring to the table. That’s why this country is so great we have a diverse group bringing cultures from all over the world and improving the American way of life. If we all just looked at one another the way the Boy Meets world cast looked at their friends the world would be a nicer place to live. I’m thankful I live in a country I can be myself and learn from other people who come from all walks of life. I was raised to treat everyone with kindness and I hope that future generations continue to pass this down and the world comes together instead of pushing each other apart. We need love and thanks more than ever.

Happy Holidays!
