We are now getting into the Thanksgiving season (you already have your house decked out for Christmas if you’re like me). The weather is starting to cool down, the leaves are turning all sorts of different colors (if you’re from the midwest), and the holiday specials are once again beginning for a whole new holiday season.
One holiday episode that I definitely wanted and needed to do this blog was the It’s Always sunny in Philadelphia Thanksgiving episode. The Gang squashes their beef is an off the wall gathering of some of the most memorable secondary characters in Sunny’s fourteen season run. Thanksgiving seems to be the perfect occasion to settle the score with those they’ve wronged and who wouldn’t use the holiday spirit to increase your chances of forgiveness.
The episode starts out with Dennis and Mac at a D grade blockbuster video store ran by Liam and Ryan McPoyle. They have refused to rent videos to the guys and revoke their membership and destroy Dennis’ club card (to no prevail due to Liam’s poor depth perception with only having one eye).
We move to the bar where Frank and Charlie are bundled up because their heat is broken and their landlord won’t fix it until Frank pays him. Enter Dee who got the wrong sandwiches because Gail the snail works at the Wawa (The Wawa is a gas station/convenience store franchise located on the east coast that does offer some pretty delicious food).
They all agree the only way to resolve all these conflicts and regain access to their favorite spots is to squash their beef (figuratively and literally). The gang has a big Thanksgiving dinner at Dennis & Mac’s apartment and invite all their frenemies to try and make peace.
The idea of squashing their beefs is all very on the nose as Dennis says. They want to “bury the hatchet” and “wipe the slate clean”. All metaphorically, but the guests arrival shows the hostility amongst everyone. We do get a great dancing stand off featuring the Tom Tom Club’s Genius of Love.
The gang actually has a document for everyone to sign as a peace treaty like the pilgrims and Indians. Rickety Cricket, the McPoyles, Pondey, Gail the snail, Wang, and Bruce (wrong Bruce just some Jabroni who’s car they blew up) all sit at the table waiting on apologies that are half assed and with no remorse. The whole ordeal goes array and everyone goes into a free for all food fight.
When the Gang steps away from it all they realize Frank’s money fire is the cause to smoke coming from the bedroom. They go out into the hall and drill the door shut with everyone inside to fend for themselves. The Gang ultimately decides they don’t need to resolve anything with any of these people and can just carry on their lives going to new places.
If you’re a Sunny fan then you know the wild antics and off the wall scenarios that take place, but this episode is one that is sure to get you in the Thanksgiving spirit. We all have grievances and disputes with our friends or family, but it’s the holidays that bring people together (Not so much for the gang). So learn from their mistakes don’t let any qualms come between you and those you love. Have a great time during the holidays and let the beef be squashed. Let me know what you think of the episode and as always like, share, and subscribe.
Happy Holidays!
