Bob’s Burgers is one of those shows that you know instantly when the theme comes on. Over the course of it’s ten seasons (eleven started September 27th) it has produced some of the best holiday episodes a series could turn out. Now the series didn’t start their holiday extravaganza until the third season, but they came out strong. I myself am a big Bob’s Burgers fan so it could be the bias in me, but today I will be diving into the Halloween episodes and ranking them. The ranking is all personally based so you may not agree with my list, but in the end you will want to watch every episode this Halloween. There really isn’t a bad one in the batch.
Tina & the Real Ghost (Season 5 Episode 2)
Tina and the Real Ghost comes in at number 8. We see a slight nod to Lars and the real girl. Louise is even rocking the silver scorpion jacket from Drive, so multiple shoutouts to Ryan Gosling. Now the premise of the episode starts out with an exterminator coming to spray the Belcher’s basement, but a Ghostly presence scares him off. Linda decides to have an Ouija Board seance and low and behold Tina meets “Jeff” the teenage Ghost. Being the quirky romantic that she is Tina starts dating Jeff keeping him in a shoebox. The episode follows Tina’s relationship and how the other kids see this. Definitely a good episode, but comes in last for the teenage romance overshadowing the Halloween aspect. Although Gene’s half Turner half Hooch costume is one of his top collaboration looks.
The Wolf of Wharf Street (Season 8 Episode 3)
A wolf seems to be loose in the Wharf and the news is discouraging kids from Trick or Treating. Linda decides to go with the kids and hunt down the “Werewolf”. Bob is laid up for the night after injuring himself trying to put on his old chef pants and the medication he takes has his mind playing halloween tricks of their own. Costumes include Gene as grapes…..handsome grapes, Louise as Anton from No country for old men, and Tina as a Mombie after raiding Linda’s Closet. The Foggy exterior setups for an eerie episode and Teddy does show all the signs pointing to him being a werewolf. This episode was hard to place because it has great elements, but just doesn’t compare to the remaining six.
Pig Trouble in Little Tina (Season 10 Episode 4)
Another Tina centered Halloween episode. Pig Trouble in Little Tina another great pun on the classic Big Trouble in Little China starring Kurt Russell. Tina has to dissect a pig fetus in science class, but the experience traumatizes her and a slew of nightmares ensue throughout the episode. Back at the restaurant Bob and Linda deal with an earwax problem Bob has and try all sorts of remedies to get the wax to come out. Another great costume mashup in this episode with Louise as the baby Bjorn Identity, but Gene as Fiona Apple Sauce seems a little weak compared to his other brilliant ideas. This being the most recent Halloween episode may be the reason it ranks so low. Give it time and it may move up the list.
Teen-a-Witch (Season 7 Episode 3)
I know the Tina based Halloween episodes seem to be getting a lot of flack on this list, but don’t get me wrong every episode on this list is great. This episode also starts off with a big laugh when Louise dresses up as Mr. Frond for a costume contest. The premise of the episode finds Tina always falling short of winning the Costume contest and feels all her creativity is going unnoticed. This was her year she had the perfect idea a “Hot Mess”, but Tammy who was eaves dropping overhears and decides to steal the Costume for herself. Tina starts casting spells in the process of finding her new costume and an unlikely bandit is stealing Bob’s Jack-O-Lanterns. No Gene costume magic in this episode, but Regular sized Rudy does sport a Marcel Marceau mime costume that’s pretty spot on.
Nightmare on Ocean Avenue Street (Season 9 Episode 4)
Doctor Yapp the insane frat boy dentist (played by Ken Jeong) is paying big money for kids Halloween candy. The Belcher children are not impressed and would never give up their Halloween treats. Meanwhile Teddy gets into a deck the halls battle with the shop owner next to Bob’s Burgers. This episode might be the best collection of Belcher kid costumes. Gene with the Andre the Giant 3000 getup might be the best of all his costumes. Louise as the dragon with a girl tattoo totally flipped the script. Lastly Tina is Nun of your business but Linda just doesn’t get it. Someone is stealing all the kids bags of candy and it’s up to the Belchers to find out who before Halloween is ruined. I do have to say Regular sized Rudy is competing pretty hard for funniest costume of the series with his Paul Rudd costume, really caught me off guard.
Fort Night (Season 4 Episode 2)
The trick of the century the Belchers and Pesto twins decide to be a giant dragon that’s being constructed by Bob and Linda. This will ensure they get their candy overhaul. Tina is growing up and this is going to be her last trick or treating experience so it has to end with a bang. Enter Millie the psychotic “best friend” of Louise. We see our antagonist Millie terrorizing the kids and their only sanctuary is the box fort they created out back. The only problem is a truck blocks the exit and they are trapped. Will the Belchers escape or will Tina miss her last Halloween? Twists and turns will keep the suspense coming throughout the episode which places it so high on the list.
The Hauntening (Season 6 Episode 3)
Louise seems to be fearless. Nothing or nobody can scare her and she seems to be bored with any attempts made to try and get her heart racing. Bob and Linda decide to try and finally scare the pants off their youngest daughter. It seemingly isn’t going to plan, but a turn of events sees things getting out of hand. This is by far the scariest episode of the bunch and will give you that Halloween chill you’re looking for.
Full Bars (Season 3 Episode 2)
Every child’s dream is trick or treating and getting a full sized candy bar opposed to those dinky fun sized ones. This is the Belcher children’s first Halloween going out alone for trick or treating. Edward Scissor hands, A Mommy Mummy, and Queen Latifah round out the iconic Belcher costumes. It seems the kids make their way on the ferry to Kingshead Island when they were warned to stay on the regular route. Bob on the other hand is annoyed having to attend Teddy’s Halloween party. The Belchers are in candy heaven, but Hell Hunt could mess up their whole night. This being the first Halloween episode of the series still holds true to be the best of the bunch.
I hope you enjoyed my list and would love to hear which of the Bob’s Burgers Halloween Specials is your all time favorite.
Happy Holidays!
